This is the range at which family rides stop being an exercise in patience. Gears mean a child can hold a reasonable pace without redlining, and the low weight means they still have legs left at the turnaround point.
If you are buying an e-bike so you can ride with your children, sort their bike at the same time. The plan does not survive an unhappy eight-year-old on something heavy.
