Woom

Kids' bikes that are actually built for kids

Woom builds pedal bikes for children that weigh roughly half what a big-box kids' bike weighs, with brakes small hands can actually pull. It is the only brand here that is not electric, and it is on the floor because it is the one we would put our own children on.

Best for
Parents who have watched a child give up on a bike that was simply too heavy for them.
Range
5 models — we can order any of them
  • Roughly half the weight of a typical department-store kids' bike
  • Brake levers sized and sprung for small hands
  • Correct geometry per age — not a shrunken adult bike
  • Holds resale value unusually well; many parents pass them down or sell them on

The weight thing, again

A department-store 16-inch kids’ bike can weigh half as much as the child riding it. Imagine being handed a bicycle that weighs 60 percent of your body weight and then being told to have fun. This is the actual reason a great many children decide they do not like cycling, and it gets misdiagnosed as fear or lack of interest almost every time.

Woom’s entire engineering brief is weight. Lighter frame, lighter wheels, lighter everything. The effect on a nervous six-year-old is immediate and slightly startling to watch.

A bike a child can pick up after a fall is the bike they get back on.

Brakes they can reach

The second thing nobody checks: brake levers on cheap kids’ bikes are adult levers, requiring adult hand strength at an adult reach. A child who cannot confidently stop will not confidently go. Woom’s levers are designed around a child’s grip, which sounds like a footnote and is in fact the whole game.

Why a kids’ brand sits in an e-bike shop

Because the most common reason adults here buy an e-bike is to ride with their family, and that falls apart if the eight-year-old is miserable. Getting the child’s bike right is what makes the parent’s bike get used. We would rather sell both correctly than sell one and watch it sit.

Six sizes, and the right one is decided by the child standing over the bike — not by their age.

Sizing is not guesswork

Woom sizes by the child, not the birthday. Bring them in — the fitting takes ten minutes and saves you buying the wrong size twice.

Ride a Woom — and then ride something else

The most useful test ride is a comparison. Try this brand against the one you were not considering; that is usually where the decision actually gets made.
